چکیده

The objective of this study was to determine if deworming nursing calves prior to weaning would increase calf weaning weight. A total of 568 calves from three different locations were randomly assigned to either a deworming treatment (doramectin injectable) or control (no treatment) 90 d prior to weaning. Dewormed calves had greater body weight gain prior to weaning compared to control calves. There was no effect of deworming treatment on cow body condition score. Deworming nursing calves resulted in a positive return on investment for anthelmintic treatment.

Internal parasite levels and response to anthelmintic treatment by beef cows and calves.

Albendazole (methyl 5-propylthio-1 H-benzimidazol-2-yl carbamate) was used as an anthelmintic in a 3-yr study involving 578 beef cows and 438 nursing calves. Infection levels for nematodes, coccidia, and tapeworm were relatively low throughout the 3-yr period. Eggs per gram of feces in cows and calves were lower (P less than .01) 2 wk posttreatment but were not different 5 mo later, when calves...

Performance and nursing behaviour of beef cows with different types of calf management.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of calf management during lactation on dam performance and nursing behaviour. Thirty-six multiparous beef cows (aged 7.5 ± 0.52 years) of Parda de Montaña breed (mean live-weight (LW) at calving 566 ± 9.3 kg) with a moderate body condition (mean 2.6 ± 0.02 on a 1 to 5 scale), were assigned to three nursing frequencies from the day after part...

Nematode control in suckler beef cattle over their first two grazing seasons using a targeted selective treatment approach

BACKGROUND With concerns over the development of anthelmintic resistance in cattle nematode populations, we must re-examine our approach to nematode control in cattle. Targeted selective treatments (TST), whereby individual animals are treated instead of entire groups, are being investigated as an alternative. The study objective was to determine if anthelmintic usage could be reduced using a T...

Production and Economic Efficiencies of Intensified Cow-calf Production Management Systems

The effect of calf weaning age on cow and calf performance and feed utilization was investigated over 2 yr. Multiparous, crossbred, lactating beef cows (n = 156) with summer-born calves were blocked by prebreeding BW, stratified by calf age, and assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatments within strata. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treat...

A stochastic model to investigate the effects of control strategies on calves exposed to Ostertagia ostertagi

Predicting the effectiveness of parasite control strategies requires accounting for the responses of individual hosts and the epidemiology of parasite supra- and infra-populations. The first objective was to develop a stochastic model that predicted the parasitological interactions within a group of first season grazing calves challenged by Ostertagia ostertagi, by considering phenotypic variat...
